Travel Journal #1 Destination: York, England

Even though most of the UK’s cities have long histories, York is particularly ancient. The region has settlements as early as 8000 BC and was later founded by Ancient Rome under the name “Eboracum” in AD 71. Its turbulent history includes Viking invasion, Norman conquest, and destruction during the Second World War.

My favorite site is definitely the York Minster. Magnificently built, upon entering, it transports me to another period, witnessing the splendor and glory of the past. The second largest gothic cathedral in northern England; it also houses impressive stained glass. Not only do I enjoy walking around, but I also like the extensive exhibition that showcases its humble beginning.

Another favorite is the Cold War Bunker. Fully restored, it vividly shows all the equipment, machines, and spaces for up to 60 local volunteers to monitor nuclear explosions and fallout. As a huge history fan, it feels unbelievable to be so close to the past. I can imagine the fear of mass destruction caused by nuclear warfare.

York is also known as the “City of Thousand Ghosts”. “The York Ghost Merchants” is the most famous shop that sells handmade ghosts. Though I still don’t get its popularity, I did purchase a ghost that, I must admit, looks quite endearing as time goes on.

York is a fun city full of history to explore, but it has too many tourists, especially during summer vacations!
